Signs and Rumors

December 14, 2007 By: Don Marsh Category: Candidates

As we come to within 6 weeks of Gainesville’s City Commission election, it has been all Bryan Harman all of the time, until now. Harman’s campaign signs have been up for over a month, but after this weekend a quick spray of Bonnie Mott signs hit the streets, mostly along the well-traveled NW 34th St. and on Glen Springs Road. The third contestant for that seat, Lauren Poe, had one sign present along 34th St. that I had seen.

It seems strange to see campaign signs going up at Christmas time, but we have the Florida Primaries to thank for this. Both major parties wanted to get a jump on the primary season, so our city commission candidates will be getting even less sleep than usual thanks to the convergence of campaigning and hectic holiday calendars. Perhaps the traditionally ornery Gainesville voters, who don’t show up for these elections but gripe continually, will be even more offended by campaign signs than usual and bring the turnout down to a nice 5%.

A new rumor has surfaced, to go with the rumor that Rick Bryant will be taking on Mike Byerly for his County Commission seat next fall. The word on the street seems to be that we are going to see the return of Tony Domenech to take on Paula Delaney. The former City Commissioner lost his last two attempts to return to the Gainesville governing body. Paula Delaney was also treated badly by Gainesville voters back in 2001 when she was dethroned as Mayor by the much-maligned Tom Bussing.

Stay tuned…
