This project began under the banner of FreeForAllCandidates.com back in 2004. It’s purpose was to create a free level playing field for all local candidates running for office in Alachua County. Last year I felt that the site was not Alachua-Centric enough, so I bought this domain, and I plan on continuing to make information available about our often neglected candidates for local office.
In the past, candidates have been ignorant of the web, but I hope they are beginning to catch on. People want actual information, not sound bites that have been dumbed down to the amoebic level of intelligence. So, for the first time ever I am making this site available as a blog to which the candidates can actually post their own articles. I will grant each candidate who registers with the Supervisor of Elections Office a username and password, regardless of the conventional wisdom about his or her chances.
WARNING: Any candidate who fobs off this privilege to a well-meaning volunteer who screws it up will get no sympathy from the electorate nor from me. Please, do something noble and daring. Interact with your constituents. Inform them about the issues. Answer their concerns.
ADVICE: Local politics is a rude and ugly business as it is practiced online. Anonymous comments are allowed, but keep in mind that the nasty ones make the offending commenter look like an idiot. And a candidate who can overlook a fault and respond with class and dignity scores a lot of points, even if he is wrong on the issue.
